After a young red fox is orphaned, Big Mama (an owl), Dinky (a gold robin), Pooh and friends (five stuffed animals), Buster, Babs Bunny, and Brer Rabbit (three rabbits), Roo, Kanga (two stuffed kangaroos), Tennessee Tuxedo (a penguin), Chumley Walrus (a walrus), Shag, Glitz, Exe, Hunter, Muzzle, Colleen (six dogs), Plucky Duck (a duck), Hamton Pig (a pig), Shirley the Loon (another duck), Fifi Le Fume (a skunk), and Boomer (a woodpecker) have arranged Widow Tweed to adopt the little fox, Widow names the fox Tod, long for Toddler because since he reminds Widow of a toddler. In a cottage of a hunter named Amos Slade, with his Greyhound hunting dog Chief, his friends Brer Fox and Brer Bear, Amos introduces Chief his new Bloodhound puppy named Copper. Tod, Pooh and the others, and Cooper later become the best of friends. Amos grows frustrated with Copper for wandering off to play which he thinks Copper is chasing Tod and sometimes catching him, so he places him on a leash.

While Tod, Copper, Pooh and the others play around at his home, Tod accidentaly awekens Chief, who chases them around the yard. Amos, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear run after him and Pooh and his pals until they are stopped by Widow, who defends Tod, Pooh, and the others. After an argument with Widow, Amos thinks of killing Tod at his first opportunity, because Brer Bear Fox and Brer Bear also plan to skin Tod, Pooh, and the others, who will be caught if they ever return to Amos' property again. Now hunting season has come, and as Chief and Copper go with Amos, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear to a hunting ground, Tod, Pooh, and the others are left alone.

As Big Mama tells Tod and the others that Copper will have to do as he is told with a song "Lack of Education", Tod then refuses to believe Big Mama. Months pass, and Copper and Tod grow to adulthood. In the night of Copper's return, Tod goes to over to visit him, and talks to him to ask him if they are still friends, but when Copper tells Tod that those days are over, and that he is a hunting dog now, he orders Tod to leave, only for ol' Chief to awaken and bark to alert Amos, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear, who also wake up, and as they all go after him again, Copper finally catches up to Tod, but tells him to run on to save himself, and then diverts Amos and Brer Fox in the wrong direction, so that Tod can escape. As he escapes on a high railroad trestle, he flees from Chief and Brer Bear, who maintain their pursuit onto the bridge. Much to Amos and Brer Fox's horror, as a fast moving train suddenly approaches, Tod is to duck under the vehicle, and leaves Chief, who suffers a broken leg, and Brer Bear, who is hit in the head, to get accidentally struck and wounded and fall helplessly down the steep cliff toward the river below. Angered by this of Brer Bear and Chief obeying their commands to jump, only for Chief to break his leg and Brer Bear to hit his head in the fall, Amos, Copper, and Brer Fox blame Tod for the accident and swear vengeance. When Amos tells Widow that he will kill Tod for hurting Chief, Widow, now realizing that Tod is no longer safe, brings him to the woods to keep him away from Amos, who figures out where Tod went, but, despite Widow's warnings, he is undeterred that his temper will put him into a lot of trouble one day. Pooh and the others watch her doing it without being seen while Brer Fox, Brer Bear, Amos, and Copper plan revenge on Tod by illustrating of using a steel trap to catch Tod. The next morning, Pooh and the others along with Big Mama decide to find Tod in the forest and succeed in finding him and all introduce him to a female fox (vixen) named Vixey, who then causes Tod to fall in love with her, much to Pooh and the others' delight.

The next morning, Amos, Copper, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear tresspass into the woods without anyone knowing and start hunting for Tod and Vixey, who have their romance interrupted when Amos, Copper, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear carry their steel traps with them. Amos, Copper, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear set up their steel traps along the path next to some water where Tod and Vixey are going to drink some water. They find the two foxes and the others, who travel through the pathway to get some water to drink, and escape by setting off all of the steel traps, but while trying to get them by chasing them to Vixey's borrow, the two foxes and the others escape, and when the chase climaxes to the top of the reserve's waterfall where Tod, Vixey, Pooh, and the others escape, Amos, Copper, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear accidentally shift the battle to antagonise a big black grizzly bear, who is sleeping and inadvertentaly being woken up to get provoked by them. Amos gets off only a single shot, trips, and falls down the ravine, but gets his foot caught in one of his own steel traps, and loses his shotgun, that lands on a small tree sapling and falls loose and lies just slightly out of his reach, so Brer Fox and Brer Bear try their best to get the trap off his foot.

Copper fights the bear, snarling and biting, but is no match for the power of the giant savage animal, and then is nearly killed in a very vicious fight, trying bravely to defend the injured hunter, who is still trapped in his own trap. On hearing Copper's yelping echo, Tod, Pooh and the others turn back to see the horror of Tod's very childhood friend getting nearly killed in a dangerous battle. Against Copper's better judgement, Tod, Pooh, and the others decide to come to his aid, and intervene to save their friend in the moment in which the bear is going to kill Copper. Tod, Pooh, and the others continue to battle the bear and end up luring him up on a fallen trunk, which breaks and sends all the animals falling down the waterfall. The bear is killed, due to his weight being too heavy for the trunk, and when he is never seen again, Tod, Pooh, and the others swim for the shore, and when Tod is wounded, Pooh and the gang are still fine, but soaked and wet. When Copper is here to meet them as he approaches Tod lying in the water, Amos, who has escaped his terrible trap, tries to shoot Tod and the others, and because Copper has stopped Amos, he is Tod's friend, and protects him, and refuses to move aside. Amos, now realizing that Tod, Copper, Pooh, and the others have saved each others' life, drops the gun, and calms down, because he realizes that he will not kill Tod after accidentally landing into one of his own traps. Brer Fox and Brer Bear decide not to chase Pooh and the others again for now and then follow Amos and Copper back home.

In the morning, when Boomer and Dinky find that Squeeks (a caterpillar) has turned into a butterfly, Widow has trouble healing Amos with a plaster with Brer Fox and Brer Bear helping as Amos is in pain of injuring his foot by his horrible trap, Chief and Copper watch him and start to sleep. Copper is remembering what he and Tod said about being friends forever while they young, and as Tod and Vixey watch down at the houses from high above the forest, Pooh and the others ride off to the sunset to see what new adventure lies within them.
